Thanks to Tim Booth from Linc Police for supplying the following information .
"Data available for 2005 indicates that there were around 3,750 processed reports / claims for stolen caravans. in real terms therefore the figure is likely to be around 4,000. This is a considerable year on year reduction, particularly as there has been a substantial increase in the numbers of units out there and one could argue 'available to be targeted for theft'. A number of agencies as well as manufacturers are working hard to maintain and increase this reduction"
I am police officer with Wiltshire police, I am currently investigating a stolen caravan from the Wiltshire area and would like to make other caravan owners aware of what it happening.
The injured party has been using his caravan as his home address for a few weeks since he started his new job in Wiltshire. The caravan is an Ace Jubilee Statesman, white in colour with red flashes and also has alloy wheels. The owner purchased the caravan after being medically out of the army for injuries received through service, and with his pay out he bought a caravan to start a new life.
On Monday the 7th of August 2006 the owner locked the caravan and left it secured with a tow hitch lock and also a wheel clamp at a registered caravan club site. By 4pm that afternoon his caravan along with his worldly possessions had gone, leaving the owner with nothing but the clothes he was stood in. In total the owner has stood to have lost at least £15.000.00 worth of caravan and contents. The caravan is registered with CRiS and insured. We ask other caravan owners to be wary of being offered caravans
at a cheap price to really think why are they being offered that caravan at such a low price.
Owners should consider their security options very carefully and I would strongly recommend that all caravan owners should consider the installment of a tracker device, especially if you want to see the caravan again. On one occasion where a caravan was stolen with a tracker it was tracked and recovered within three hours.
Do not keep your caravan documents within your caravan, as the owner of the caravan stolen this week had all the documents within the caravan and now the thieves have all the details they want to sell the caravan on supposedly legitimate.
